Read about it during beta after quiting an MMO and looking for a new one. Decided not to get it but later just picked it up randomly and ended up loving the game.

A group of friends who were into it wanted me to check it out. Until then, I've never heard of Guild Wars nor ever played an online game. I saw the "No subscription fees" tag and thought: Why not?
...
Ironically, two years later I'm the only one out of that group who still plays actively.

What attracted me to Guild Wars was the idea of free-form gameplay.
I could choose how to play, when to play (no fees) and where to play, without any "must go here and grind before you can reach next zone" type crap as in many other MMOs.
Notice that's in the past tense. GG ANet for taking the spirit of the game and crushing every ounce of life out of it.
My fondest gaming memories are probably with the Quest for Glory series from Sierra. I still have all five, and occasionally play them. My other favorite franchise has been the X space sim series, and Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series.

Peer pressure! suggested by many friends. 6 months later, they all quit for WoW... and I'm the last guy still in gw. Figures... I'm losing interest fast...

The style of the graphics, no monthly fee, fast paced fun gameplay, rpg.
I've tried WoW after playing GW awhile and deicded to go back to GW, WoW just didn't have the right type of classes/gameplay and graphics for me.

I honestly have NO clue. At the time, I played only console video games. I walked down the PC game aisle, browsing the games, and this one caught my eye. I rarely ever buy anything $30+ without knowing something about it first, but this was an exception!

Final Fantasy, The Elder Scrolls....been involved with RPGs for sometime.
Like many who have posted already, I wanted to play an online RPG, and Guild Wars was free, and new.
Got it as a Christmas present about five months after it was released.

I am a big fan of RPGs, grew up playing Zelda, Dragon Warrior, and the Final Fantasy titles.
I had been wanting to try an online RPG for a while, talked with a few people, and one of the guys who works for a bookstore on my route (I am a UPS driver woo hoo) started talking about RPGs, and about how I wanted to get an online one, and we talked about WoW and Guild Wars, and he was telling me how awesome Guild Wars was, and that I would probably have more fun with that. This was a little before Nightfall came out, because the next week, he couldn't stop talking about how cool Nightfall was.
So Christmas time came, and the wife got me Nightfall.
I immediately fell in love with it, and bought the GOTY version of Prophecies, and for Valentines Day, my wife got me Factions.
I was also getting sick of people bothering me to join their guilds, "Hey, you, why aren't you in a guild, this is Guild Wars you know..." and other fun comments, so I went and started my own guild lol.
I'm also a admin over at Cobra Island, a fan site/forums dedicated to G.I. Joe, which is where my guild name came from.
Anyways, I kept talking about the game so much to people over there, I got three of them to buy the game as well.
It's a fun game to play, and I love playing with guild members, and teaming up with other players. It's a very awesome experience, playing with people you never met before. Got lots of funny stories now because of teaming up with other players lol.
Anyways, that's my story.

Hmmm. Probably the fact that it was "fresh" and not P2P. To me, it was a whole new world to corrupt, since I could do it without a monthly fee, it seemed like a better idea than WoW. So, here I am, a bit over two years later, not regretting one second of it

It appealed to me mainly because there isn't a monthly fee. I read about it a lot beforehand and the more I read about it the better it looked. And I am still very impressed.
Have been playing rpg's since I was a child. Started with text. Before Guild Wars I was still playing on a MUD. Best RPG though that really got me hooked: Diablo II Lord of Destruction. Wow, I was hooked to that.
Starting to get really hooked to Guild Wars now as well. Eh, lovely.

I had always wanted to play a game like this, but was always turned off by the idea of I pay $50 for the game, then have to pay so much every mth to play it the only way it can be. To me, if I have to pay a monthly fee, the game should be free. But once I heard GW was No Monthly Fee ever, I jump on, and been playing since.

As I am a casual gamer, I was attracted by the no monthly fee (as I could not play during several weeks), skill promoting instead of grind, balanced PvP, and the fact you could do short-paced mission/quests (So you could play at lunch time or so).
However, I think GW went far from this beginning attractive features.
